* Catalan police say about two hours after the attack at Las Ramblas a driver knocked down two police officers. It's not clear if the incident is related to the Las Ramblas attack.

* Witnesses said the white van zigzagged at high speed down Las Ramblas, knocking down pedestrians and leaving bodies strewn across the ground.

Who carried out the attack?

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and police have released a picture of the man who allegedly rented the van. Spanish media outlets are naming one of the suspects arrested as 28-year-old Driss Oukabir.

He has spent time in prison in Figueres, Catalonia, being released in 2012. Anti-terrorism sources told El Pais that Oukabir arrived in Barcelona from Morocco on August 13.

Police are still trying to identify how many attackers were involved.

Where did the attack take place?

The van was driven down Las Ramblas - a central boulevard that runs 1.2km through the centre of Barcelona.

The boulevard runs from the city's Pla??a de Catalunya (Catalonia Square) to the Christopher Columbus monument at the seafront.

It is popular with tourists because of its market stalls, bars and restaurants.
