A special donation has been made to the Mid North Coast Local Area Police Command to provide comfort for children experiencing trauma or crisis.

The Lions comfort quilts and rugs were donated by Deb Schmizter of Halliday’s Point Lions Club.

The quilts were made by hand courtesy of Hallidays Point Knit Wits, Hallidays Point Quilters, Hallidays Point Craft group and community members.

“A comfort object, transitional object or security blanket is an item used to provide psychologicalc omfort, especially in unusual or unique situations, for children,” Mrs Schmizter said.

”Common examples include dolls, teddy bears or blankets. Research with children on this subject has shown that security blankets actually do give security to those children attached to them.”

Halliday's Point Lions has supported this worthwhile project across the Mid North Coast.

To date, 142 Lions comfort quilts and rugs have been distributed over the last 12 months.

DVLO Senior Constable Karen Bleasdale said nine comfort rugs have been issued to JIRT (the child sexual assault squad) with others to be distributed across the LAC from Port Macquarie north to Nambucca Heads.

“JIRT were so appreciative and impressed with the quality of them. They give them to the children to snuggle up in while they are being interviewed to help comfort them when they have to talk.

“The kids love that they get to take them home and it's something for them.”

If you are able to help with this wonderful project please contact project organiser Deb Schmitzer on 0447 542 422 or project chairperson Maureen Timmins 0447 920 631 from Hallidays Point Lions.
