That helped young athletes who gained selection/qualification in sports recognised by the National Sports Commission, to compete at state, national and international sporting competitions.
The annual report of the Mayor’s Sporting Fund activities said the fund received a total of 24 applications covering 13 sports in the 12 months to June 2017.
“Our athletes have travelled extensively throughout Australia and overseas attending state titles, national championships and selection competitions for world championships,” the report said.
A number of local athletes have been selected in development squads.
The 2016 Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship was awarded to cyclist Liam Magennis.
Three major fundraising events were successfully coordinated and staged with $18,070 raised in the 12 month period.
The Mayor’s Sporting Fund has provided $111,059 in financial assistance to young athletes since 2010.
The council has confirmed the latest round of grant assistance under the fund.
Maddison Drewitt has been granted $500 to assist with the expenses associated with being a member of the Under 13s Girls State Hockey Team at the National Hockey Championships in Perth.
Swimmer Tom Berryman will receive $350 to help offset expenses arising from the Pacific School Games in Adelaide.
A grant of $250 will go to Morgan Jean who competed as a member of the North Coast team at the NSW CHS Athletics Championships in Sydney.
Deputy mayor Lisa Intemann noted the very important work of the committee in supporting up and coming elite athletes.
Cr Intemann said the fund was helping young people and their families enormously in moving them forward in their sporting prowess.
Mayor Peta Pinson congratulated the recipients who she said were obviously champions in their chosen field.
“This will go a long way in helping them and their families achieve their goals,” she said.
