The workshop was presented by Johns River residents Ana Martin and Sven Stephan from Amber Drop Honey who said it’s important to make people aware that bees are vital to the native environment of Australia.
“We need bees for pollination and for the future,” Ana said.
Children, parents and adults were given an overview of bees which included how they reproduce, how they live and how they get their food.
Ana said bees are currently under threat due to the use of pesticides.
Children Ana said often find bees interesting and are really intrigued by the hive.
“If you teach them not to swat or not to be aggressive when bees are around they will learn that bees aren’t trying to harm them,” she said.
Ana and Sven have about 60 bee hives on their property. All their bees are rescue bees from properties.
