Lyn and Grant Lugg are an amazing couple when it comes to angling.
Lyn is the current Australian Ladies Angling Champion, after her result in the Australian Anglers Association even held in Wallaroo in SA.
Her husband, Grant is NSW Champion of Champions.
This event is contested over five categories:
- deep sea
- beach and rock
- casting event
The scores of each event are added to determine the Champion of Champions.
In winning this event, Grant had to compete against the best fishermen from all over NSW, one of whom was his wife, Lyn, who actually ended up runner-up to Grant, resulting in the highest point score ever attained by a lady.
Grant never had the event one until the last round. He says Lyn was on his tail all the way.
The estuary event was held at Lake Macquarie, where Lyn won the Ladies and Grant was runner-up in the men’s.
The deep sea event was held in the South Coast of NSW. Lyn won the Ladies and Grant won the Men’s Section.
The beach and rocks was a local event, held on the Mid North Coast, where Lyn won Ladies and Grant won his Men’s Section.
In the casting event, Lyn was fourth in Ladies and Grant was fourth in Men’s.
The final stage was the freshwater event, held at Wyangala Dam where Grant won the Men’s section and Lyn won the Ladies’ section.
In a twist of fate, Lyn and Grant’s boat broke down out at sea in practice at Port Kembla in the deep sea event and motor parts would take weeks to come from Japan.
Grant was packing to come home when one of their fishing mates, Wally Faye, in Adelaide, heard of their bad luck. He towed his boat to Sydney and lent it to Lyn and Grant. They took it to the South Coast, just in time to fish the competition where they both won their event.
Grant has been NSW State Captain since 2013 and will lead NSW in 2018 on home waters in Harrington at the Australian Anglers Association National Angling Championships.
