Senior students competed in the ICMJ Meat Judging and continued their success in this area. The competition operates as a state final in conjunction with Wingham Beef Week.
George Simiana was named Reserve Champion Beef Carcase Judge and Reserve Champion Retail and Primal Identification.
George Simiana, Anneliese Knaack, Jazmin Madden and Dominique Wyse made up the Champion Team Beef Carcase Judge and Champion Team Retail and Primal Identification. These students won Overall Champion Team for the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza and Overall Champion School Team for NSW.
The team had phenomenal success with every student winning a ribbon in either parading or cattle judging.
Members worked hard in the lead up to the event practicing their skills in cattle handling and judging.
Student Angela Lee said the team’s focus on leadership throughout the year helped to achieve the results.
“Our results are a direct reflection of the comradery within the team,” she said.
“We would not have achieved these results without the support and assistance from each other.”
Students selected two heifers from the school breeding herd to enter into the carcase competition. They also showed a Waverly Angus Scone School Steer and a Murray Grey x Speckle Park steer bred by Andrea Bourke of Crowdy Farm.
Suzie, a Hereford x Limousin placed fourth in the led classing and Jack the team’s Waverly Angus Steer placed third. All four cattle achieved competitive results in the carcase competition.
Teachers Mark Hickson and Emma Cutler guided the students through the program and manage the breeding herd with a strong focus on student input.
“The Camden Haven High School breeding herd continues to produce high quality carcase calves,” Mr Hickson said.
“The Breeding Herd allows students to develop first hand skills in all aspects of managing a beef herd.”
The Beef Bonanza attracted 850 students and around 350 head of cattle in the carcase competition.
The school thanked Grumpy’s Tender Meats for continued support and assistance in meat judging.
