Now a member of the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame as a solo artist Braithwaite has experienced the highs and lows of an industry that chews up and spits out lesser men and women.
He tells me it’s still such a thrill to perform live. “I played at Falls Festival, that’s something I’ll never forget. It was a different age group, but there were 20,000 there, and then 25,000 in Byron, they accept you.
“You play The Horses and they go crazy. It’s quite amazing how songs of that period, the ‘80s and ‘90s like John’s [Farnham] You’re the Voice and Horses, you can’t put your finger on it.”
On Sunday, more than 80,000 rugby league fans gave him an even bigger thrill when they sang the chorus of The Horses with him before the 2018 NRL Grand Final.
It’s not surprising really when you consider Sony Music released Days Go By – The Definitive Greatest Hits Collection in November last year and it went to No.1 on the ARIA charts.
“That really astounded me,” he says.
“The live aspect is for me the best, it’s thrilling, to hear people applaud, scream. It is very rewarding in many, many ways. The enthusiasm is still there. It’s mind over matter. If you stop playing or using your voice it can go, but if you can hang on to that youthfulness and keep a positive mind, it’s all good.”
Let’s see how many voices Braithwaite can have sing along to The Horses on Friday, October 12 at 8.30pm. Tickets are $40 and available by phone on 6559 9110, at club reception or online https://offbeat.oztix.com.au/?Event=89370.
