Last Tuesday saw the semi finals of the Minor singles with Maureen Madeley, winning against Kaye Knight, and Leonie Murphy and Olga Tolmie having a ding dong battle until they were 14 all and then Olga found her rhythm and was too good on the day for Leonie. Maureen and Olga face off next week in the final and it should be a great game to watch, good luck to both players. The consistency singles was drawn today and the draw is on the notice board - the first game is on 4 October. Players are asked to check to see when they are playing. Key draws went to Betty Jorgensen and Kim Thompson, and the weekly raffle went to Dorothy Dow. The Pennants sheet is on the board and anyone interested in playing could you please put your name down as soon as possible so the selectors can put the teams together.
We have received a petition from Bowls Australia to send to the ABC to keep bowls on the TV ,signatures are required, not just from bowlers but from everyone who wants to see bowls stay on the ABC - so sign up everyone! Friday was a hot day and everyone came in with red faces! Nice to have Rosa back with us after being in New Zealand, welcome back. We drew the 100 Club and 1st prize went to Irene Creed, Beth Seckold won 2nd prize, and Jill Parker the 3rd, congratulations to the winners. Voucher winners were Mary Stone; Mary Court; Leonie Murphy; Peter McLachlan; Peter Rudd and John Piggott. Players are reminded that clocks go back on 2nd October for the beginning of daylight saving and bowls [Tuesday and Friday] will commence at 9am .. be at the club by 8.30 and phone in if you are not coming or want your name included before 8am. On a sad note, one of our very popular ladies, Gwen Shean passed away suddenly last week. Gwen was loved by all who new her and and was always ready to pitch in and do her bit for the club. Gwen will be sadly missed, and our sympathy goes out to her family.

A special mention to Anthony “Machine” Westman whose team won the Dee Why Open 4’s 50th Anniversary. Anthony had the honour of playing with Steve Glasson who is one of the top bowlers in Australia. Steve was so impressed with Anthony’s great bowling that he has nicknamed him the Machine!! I look forward to some more impressive results from the Machine now he knows he can play on equal footings with the best. Well done, mate!

Tuesday of last week four good games in the minor singles competition were played as the girls fought for the chance to appear in the semi finals this week. Robyn Jones continued her winning form from the Spring Carnival to defeat Pam Begley, Val Wilson defeated Anna Innes, Mary Simmonds defeated Di Spinks, and Robyn Downes defeated Lynne Watson. Robyn Jones will now meet Val, thus leaving Mary and Robyn Downes to contest for the other finals spot. This shall be played on Tuesday 4th October, same day as the first round of the Major Triples Championship. Good luck and good bowling ladies.
The lucky rink winners from last Tuesday were Dorothy Lowe, June Wilson and Liz Fuller, with Glenys Potts, Lyn Duncombe and Alison Somerville taking out the runners up prize. The lucky ones from last Saturday were Jillene Olson, Anne Wilson and June Wilson, whilst the lucky runners up were Pauline Hibburt and Susan Malzard.
Tuesday 4th October is the next trade table, and also the next get together of our very important group, “The Golden Girls”.
The men’s and ladies club are holding a recruitment day on Sunday 9th October so please put your name down to volunteer to help in some capacity if you are free. Also more names are needed for the “Transplant Games” day on Sunday 16th October.
More names are needed on the pennant list that is up in the ladies room.
The next committee meeting is to be held on Monday 10th October at 1.30pm.
There is no ladies bowls on Tuesday 11th October as the Big Bowl Pairs is being held on the Monday and Tuesday of that week. There should be some great bowling for spectators to watch over the course of the two days. There is a Forster/Tuncurry mixed, mufti triples lunch and play day on Sunday 2nd October for $14.50.
The entry form for the 2012 State Carnival to be held Monday 28th May to Friday 1st June is in this month’s journal so be sure to get your team nomination in quickly.
The selectors’ roster for Saturday 1st October is Janice and Pam, and for Tuesday 4th October is Pat and Susan. The kitchen roster for that Tuesday is Bev Hyland, Lynne Lawson, Shauna Proctor and Brenda Berry.
Lastly this week I would like to thank Holly very much for taking over the duties of publicity officer whilst I was in Sydney for surgery. She did a sterling job and, I have been lead to understand, now even owns a computer. Way to go, Holly.
Hope all who are on our sick list are feeling much better and we see you out at the club again soon. Plus we look forward to seeing our “Golden Girls” again next week.

The final of The Consistency Singles between Steve Townsend and Dennis Smith, due to be played last Sunday, looks as though it will be postponed until this weekend.
We had Cruise Terminal Port Macquarie Monday Bowls and those who kept the ship steady were Ron Spinks, Glen Coey and Graeme Bateman. Bruce Hodge, Ian Scogie and Graham Fairburn were left on the starboard side as the Lucky Losers.
On Thursday, Susan’s Hair Salon, Lake Cathie produced perennial winners in Gordon Gray, Ken Taylor and Peter Slattery. Kerry Deas, Billy Stewart and Tommy Reeves were runners up while Cliff Woods, Bob Kitcher and Barry Bird were looking to hide under the hair dryers as the Lucky Losers.
On Dreamline Saturday it was Henselite Day as Graham Fairburn and Max Heselhurst, down on the Ocean Drive Green, found the perfect line to win the afternoon. Barry Waite and John Bate, who is just back from trying to save the Greek Economy, were the Lucky Losers. The jackpot was won and reverts to $50 for this Saturday.
Noel Elliott, MT, Barry Northey and Neil McCracken returned from Werris Creek with the runners up prize in the Annual Rail Workers Tournament. They admitted to being not quite sure how they managed it!
Chica and Di Batts’ Bus Tour to Terrigal all went well with the usual positives outweighing the hiccups. Ettalong showed why they continue to flourish as a bowling club with great hospitality and organisation from Ettalong Bowls Organiser, John Roberts. Our players were keen to get in a game with the Champ, Aran Sherriff, now at Ettalong, but missed out owing to his busy schedule. The wheels fell off for two of the tour party but your Chairman of Umpires managed to hold onto all four bottles as a slight slip up hiccup saw a mini skydive nearly turn into an amber disaster. Well done to Chica and especially Diana for their organisation.
Don’t forget that we have a visit from Forster Tuncurry Sports Club on Sunday Morning, 2nd October commencing at 9.30 am. Its mufti with lunch included at only $14.50/head. With Luke Cousins serving up delicious meals, that is truly a bargain.
The 9th October is The Learn to Play Bowls Morning. Vince Smith and Noel Elliott have been manning the booth outside of the Woolworths Complex seeking potential players. Ring the Club on 65855701 if a reader is keen to give lawn bowls a try.
The 16th October is Transplant Day. See the notice board for details or ring the club.
On the sick list are Bruce Roberts, who was flown to Sydney for treatment, Tommy Reeves, who I understand is in Port Macquarie Hospital and our senior coach, John White Snr, who at last and after a long wait, should now be recovering from knee surgery. We wish them all a speedy recovery and hope to see them back in the club and on the greens very soon.
Things are looking up!

Such a beautiful sunny day to hold our spring pairs we had a very good roll up with the outright winners being Dorothy Greenaway & Norma Hawkins, runners up were Gail Heys & Gwen Rixon well done ladies there was a lot of laughter out there on the greens so I take it you were all having a good time. We had the pleasure to welcome back Dorothy Greenaway and going with tradition we allowed her to take out the winners’ trophy, well done Dorothy & welcome back. It was bought to our attention that our score cards are sponsored by local businesses such as Dr Nick Stanley (Dentist) North Haven Pharmacy & Eggins Laurieton Newsagency to name a few so in return we would like to ask our bowlers to support these businesses whenever possible so they can keep sponsoring us. Some good news coming from our welfare report is that Janet Ross is at home and being cared for by family, we are all so pleased to hear you are finally on the mend. To all our other ladies we wish you a speedy recovery. To Val Glasson who is on her way to Harvey Bay you will be missed by us all & we wish you all the best in your new endeavour. To Daphne Shaw congratulations on being selected for the State Side over 60s, you still have it girl and are admired by us all, so have fun and good bowling. Our winners last Wednesday in the consistency singles were: R Brown dft L Allport, N Marsh dft D Partlett, G Hawkins dft J Clarke, G Heys dft B Coleman & Donna Lynch received a forfeit. I will commence the report this week with a little mention of the “Wanderers” tour club visit to Soldiers Point and Lemon Tree Passage which everyone who went will probably agree was a real great weekend. Great hospitality from both clubs and some very friendly games of bowls.
We did not start the trip too well as approaching the Forster turnoff a bit of a bang was heard from the back of the coach and all power was lost. Coasted over bit of a rise and were lucky enough to find an area in the middle of the dual carriageway to enable us to pull over. Gavin the owner operator had to announce thay the motor was “Kaput” . Whie we waited for a replacement coach to arrive he card table was taken out and morning tea commenced. Here we were – 54 people stranded in the middle of the expressway drinking coffee and eating biscuits. About two hours later another coach, in we got and on our way. More of the continuing story later.
North Haven bowls for the week and in Tuesday morning pairs the Wiggly Tail vouchers went to green 1 winners Denis Begley & Len Morris – r/u Charlie Ebrill & Terry Stringer and green 2 winners John Bennett & Don McKirdy – r/u Mark Ryan & Les Thompson.
Tuesday afternoon mixed winners Dot Tozer, Barbara Coleman & L. Poyser – r/u Peggy Galambos & Col Jarrett.
Wednesday triples green 1 winners Doug Rees, M. White & Nathan Marsh – r/u Barry Hodges, Bill Soutar & Doug Paul and green 3 winners Bob Robards, Dave Wright & Alex Kair – r/u Roy Farrell, Ray Emerson & Shane Globits (see what playing with genius can do to the best players).
I think these cards were from Friday but cannot be sure who was first or second – the names are Irene Ganic, Bob Haynes, Maryanne Buckley & George Ganic on rink 20 and Fred Charlwood, Bev Berry & Clarrie Osborne on rink 19. Congratulations to all of them.
Saturday triples green 1 winners Mike O’Neill, Ray Orr & Wal Coull – r/u Doug Rees, Bill Soutar & Doug Paul and green 2 winners Frank Low, Alan Low & Alex Brown – r/u Roy Johnston, Trevor Boyle & Graham Duff.
