Rain, rain & more rain resulted in the Wednesday Social Triples being washed out.
On Saturday our Grade 3 Pennant team played a very enjoyable and closely contested trial against Tuncurry Bowling Club at Kew. Both teams played great bowls with Tuncurry narrowly winning the day.
A Cash Jackpot bowls event was also played on Saturday. We had ten teams playing and enjoying the pleasant conditions after the recent rainfall.
The two game winners were Bob Kennett, Max Blair and Fred “Super Skip” Lawrence who all played some great bowls to win on a countback with 17 ends. The one win / one loss winners were Frank Low, Alan Low & Ron Hale (skip) with 16 ends. The second “runners-up” rink winners went to bowlers Jeff Nicholls, Kevin Wormald & Ray Allan (skip) with 10 ends on a countback. The raffle vouchers were won by Paul Clarke (Tuncurry BC), Ken Kinman, Les Knox & Ellery Ross. Congratulations to all the prize-winners. A special thank you to Barry Isaac, Ken Kinman, Ellery Ross and Alan Wares who assisted with the smooth running of the day.
Congratulations to the 15 players from Kew who supported North Haven Bowling Club on Friday in their Summer Breeze triples event. Well done, Shane Globits for organizing an enjoyable bowls event.
The next Cash Jackpot Triples will be held on Monday 6th February. The Jackpot currently stands at $458.00. Please enter your team by contacting Alan Wares by telephone on 6559-4203 for your chance to win the jackpot. This is a great prize for an afternoon of bowls.

Forty six loyal souls turned out on Tuesday for mixed mufti bowls and lunch to celebrate Australia Day. The weather was not kind and it was too wet for bowls, but a hot cuppa with damper and golden syrup, with lots of friendly banter, and the morning was soon whiled away nicely. Lunch of homemade casserole pie with peas and mash, followed by Pavlova, fruit salad and ice cream was enjoyed in the function room that looked a treat with its Aussie theme of gum leaves and Aussie flags. The raffle prizes were spectacular and all involved in the day in any way are to be congratulated.
Just a reminder to everyone that when functions are organised and names go on a sheet then please be aware that these numbers are catered for, and you are expected to turn up regardless of the weather.
Championship results in the Major Pairs: M. Rapp and E. Jones def. P. Flatman and R.Jones(sub); P. Begley and D. Fischer def. N. Castles and J. Soutar; H. White and N. McCracken def. Y. Howard and A. Wilson; J. Sloggett and J. Roberts def. D. Westman and S. Malzard; semi-finals will now be played next Friday, 3rd February.
The Nomination sheet for the Major Singles goes up on the Board on Friday, 3rd Feb. Nominations close on 24th Feb. with Round 1 to be played on or before 9th March.
Nomination sheets are also on the Board for the District Triples, Fours and Senior Fours.
We wish a warm welcome to new member, Dorothy Lynch, who is transferring from Queanbeyan and to Annie Barclay, a visitor from Lightning Ridge.
The Dahlsford Challenge is set down for Sunday 12th February. The sheet is on the board so get your names in.
Pennants start on the 6th February. Please ensure that you arrive at the club you are playing at by no later than 8.30am, with an 8.50am roll up time.
The selectors’ roster for Saturday 4th February is Lynne and Susan. The kitchen roster for Tuesday 7th February is Anne Constantine, Noelene Castles, Lyn Duncombe and Wendy Kennedy. There is a vacancy on the social committee so could you please give some thought as to whether you can offer your services, and step up and help Anne by becoming a member of her committee.
I wish those who are not well, or still recuperating from illness or operation, all the best, and hope that we see you back on the greens soon.
Be generous with your smiles and I wish you good luck and good bowling.

The Major Singles continued. Geoff Buggie survived a strong showing from Dennis Smith and then in the next round performed like a top seed against Paul Webster. Barry Cooperthwaite won in straight sets over Harry Weegan, Graeme Bateman’s versatility was too much for Norm Malzard’s strong backhand. Ross Fuller improved his ranking with a commanding win over Tommy Reeves. John Hendler employed his top spin forehand and sliced backhand to the utmost in an emphatic come from behind victory over Dave Pateman. Bob Ruming and Barry Bird played the ultimate five setter with Bob winning in a tie break, 31 to 30. It gets no closer! Frank Ryan also went through to the next round.
This competition is hotting up! The next round is to be completed by or on this Saturday with the follow up game on the Sunday. Geoff Buggie was a shoe in for last week’s POA Award for his double victory in the Singles Rounds.
Monday’s Bowls saw Hans Van Woekum, Graham Fairburn and Paul Webster run out the victors while Dave Jourdant, Bob Kitcher and Maree Kitcher were the Lucky losers. C’mon Bob we need you in a winning frame of mind for Walcha!
It was a shame that Australia Day Bowls was a washout because a good sized field had entered for the day. Instead of whacking a few down in the green and gold or the red, white and blue, one only had to switch on to Kenny Buckley’s excellent Oz Day radio programme to get into the spirit of the day. Maybe next year La Nina might marry El Nino and deliver us with some kinder weather.
Saturday resulted in a win for Billy Webster and John Gillett with Gary and Jake Ferguson taking home the Lucky Losers Prizes. John Morgan failed to guess right on the jackpot and so it increases to $160 next Saturday.
Also on Saturday, our number one green saw the completion of the LMNCD Reserve Presidents Pairs. Congratulations to the winners, Jim Eccleston and Gary Russell from Port City, whom progress to the zone play off. The runners up were Bruce Kerr and Ian Collins from North Haven, whom had a fine carnival given the variable conditions over the two weekends.
Put down your names for the Dahslford Shield Challenge for Sunday Morning, 12th February with morning tea at 9 and start of play at 9.30a.m. Its mufti mixed triples at $15/head and includes lunch, green fees and trophies. I was informed that the pink smoke rising from the village indicates that Dame Edna is in residence! Is she in the team?
Things are looking up! JR

Women
Hello everyone, do trust you have managed to stay dry, the weather has not been very kind to us however, it can only get better. I do not have any results from last Wednesdays championship due to our Summer Breeze Carnival being held over the past few days, the good news is that I do have the draw for next Wednesday which is: C Graham vs D Lynch, J Rose vs N Lunny, M Lynch vs S Holbert, G Heys vs M Hamilton & S McPherson vs G Hawkins. Markers required are Jan Clarke, Robyn Rumble, Ann Bell, Yvon Buxton and M Buckley.
Play commences 9am sharp roll ups at 8.40am. On Thursday we will have a trade table and all proceeds will go towards Relay for Life so if any one can help out with some cooking or craft to sell it would be most appreciated. We will also be holding a money spider so bring along your gold coins. That’s about it for this week pennants start on the 6th February all first games will be held at home so it will be a big day on the greens. So till next week stay dry remember that brighter days are going to find a way to shine in your windows and chase the blues away. Keep smiling. Cheers Lauri

What can I write about this week? The only thing that was consistent was the weather and that is not worth talking about. There were some handicap pairs played on Monday with Robyn Rumble & Lauri Wayling taking the major prize and Betty Chapman & Sue McPherson the minor.
We had a rain shortened “3’s” on Monday evening with the winners on the night Mike O’Nelll, Tim Sayer & Jamie Knox and the runners up the Kew team of C. Doyle, B. Isaac & J. O’Neill.
With two weeks to go the leaders on 11.5 points are North Haven “B” followed by Kew on 11 and North Haven “A” on 9. The leaders have a real hard match this week against the NH “D” side who have amassed the amazing total of 2 points and are going to come home with a wet sail.
That put paid to the bowls until a belated start to the “Summer Breeze” carnival on Friday when the men’s triples were played – Australia Day mixed was a wash out – when the winners were Steve Ryan, Charlie Marendaz and Barry Shorter (North Haven) with 2nd L. Bayley, D. Crowe and J. Aurisch ( Blacktown), 3rd B Grant, C. Thornton and D. Crow ( Port City) and 4th Les Allport Joe Wilson and Jerry Janik (North Haven).
Saturday mixed pairs 1st G. Heys & J. Janik (North Haven) 2nd D. Ellison & J. Ellison (The Entrance) 3rd D. Shaw & G. McLoughlin (North Haven) 4th J.Allen & R. Allen (North Haven) and 5th K. Campbell & P. Campbell (Boolaroo) with lucky runners up M. Stamp & T. Stamp (Blackhead).
Sunday was ladies pairs and the winning combinations were 1st Joy Allen & Irene Orr, 2nd Robyn Stanton & Lucille Kair, 3rd Gail Heys & Janet Ross, 4th the young pair of Barbara Waddington & GAY Hawkins and 5th Denise Ellison & Lauri Wayling.
We would like to thank the sponsors Laurieton Family Jewellers, 1st National North Haven & XXXX Summer for making the carnival possible and promise that we will be back again bigger & better next year when the weather will hopefully be kinder to us. This has been another great innovation by our bowls administrator Shane Globits.
The high point of the week was Dave (DJ) Herman and Bruce (Kermit) Kerr making the final of the state president reserve pairs for the district. They unfortunately were beaten by they did well to get that far. Congratulations to them.
Coming up: Saturday Feb 4 Pennant trial against Forster – 3 teams at home and three away.
Tuesday Feb 7 to Thursday Feb 9 visit from Newport Bowling Club.
Will have to get the calendar up to date so that I will be able to let you know what is going on around the place.
Now a little story about a couple of Bakers. The first we know as the one that works down the road and he found out last Monday that you can get into a bit of trouble while trying to show the young ones what not to do on a skateboard. You should realise, Chad, that you may not be able to do now what you wished you could have done when you were a young bloke. He did have a little bit of luck on Friday though.
The other baker (Fred) thought that he had won a prize in the raffle on Thursday only to be told that the number on his ticket did not match the one on the screen.
Nothing on a 3rd baker, (Bill) as he was not here to win all the prizes.
Hopefully next time we go to print there will be a little more bowls to report on.
Until next time keep ‘em rollin’
“Shultzie”
