To celebrate their value, Library and Information Week was celebrated across the state last week.
In addition to the traditional hardbacks and paperbacks, books are now available in digital formats including CD and MP3. These are still free to borrow and encompass hundreds of titles encompassing everything from Jane Austen and Danielle Steel, to Bill Bryson and Victor Hugo.
"The CDs and MP3s are great for car trips too," Kate says.
Music CDs and entertainment DVDs are also free to borrow. These include a wide range of movies, biographies, self-help and exercise titles, as well as popular television series like Grand Designs and Who Do You Think You Are.
Instead of borrowing items, members can also download free e-books, music and newspapers at the library itself or via a computer or mobile device.
Regional library partnerships mean the choice and range of resources have expanded significantly. The shared catalogue on the Mid North Coast Co-Operative Library Service website includes the services and resources of all seven library locations throughout the region.
At Laurieton, the selection of glossy magazines on the shelf has also expanded.
"We now have some really good foodie and lifestyle titles including Gourmet Traveller, Donna Hay, Feast and Australian Yoga Journal, plus Mojo for the music lovers, Australian Photography and Golf Digest as well as Money and Smart Investor magazine," Kate explains.
The addition of around 10 soft, new arm chairs has added a new level of comfort and relaxation to the prospect of a trip to the library.
"People say they could sit in them all day," Kate adds.
In addition to book club facilities and regular story-readings and events for children, there is also a family history group who come in to access the library's Ancestory.com subscription.
"There is something for everyone and everyone is welcome," Kate concludes.
