According to Rev. Dr John Squires, celebrating 100 years of service is a great occasion.
“The Kendall Presbyterian, and then Uniting, Church, has been a steady and faithful presence in the Camden Haven community over all that time.
“Over the century, many people have given many hours of their time and much dedication to serving the local community.
“The church has conducted baptisms, weddings and funerals for community members, provided a Sunday School for local children, delivered religious instruction classes in local schools and offered opportunities for social gatherings on a regular basis.
“The members of the congregation are always ready to assist people who have unforeseen needs and a helping hand is willingly extended in such circumstances.”
It was August 1899 when plans to build the church were announced in the Manning River Times.
When the foundation stone was duly laid on March 25, 1915, the State Moderator, the Rev. James Terras expressed the hope that they would long be able to care for the welfare of the people in their midst, a mission Rev. Dr John Squires believes has been achieved.
“Over the ensuing century, many people worked diligently and faithfully to ensure that this vision might become a reality,” Rev. Squires said.
Sunday’s guest preacher will be the Moderator of the NSW-ACT Synod of the Uniting Church, the Rev. Myung Hwa Park. The service will commence at 10am, followed by morning tea at the School of Arts.
“The celebrations will provide an opportunity for old friends to reconnect, and for current residents of the area to share in the occasion,” Rev. Squires said.
“We hope to share the day with many who come.”
A history of the church, entitled For the welfare of all the people, written by the Rev. Dr John Squires, will be on sale on the day.
