Dr Mayne has practiced in Laurieton for exactly 25 years, the longest serving general practitioner in town.
His surgery, Laurieton Medical Centre, is ceasing general practice whilst specialist and allied health services will continue.
Prior to his significant stroke, Dr Mayne underwent successful heart surgery in August last year. He came back to work part time in the practice on the corner of Tunis and Bold Streets.
"I had been trying to get an efficient takeover of the practice," said Dr Mayne.
"The plan was for me to work part time when the business was taken over, and wind down my hours over time.
"I have a large band of patients who remained faithful to the practice through my health issues last year. But [after the stroke] I can no longer work."
Dr Mayne's wife Veronique said Peter was hoping for a smooth transition for the sake of the patients and practice staff and they are still looking for ways the practice can be taken over.
Patient records are available for transfer for the next 3 weeks.
