Beaches and exposed rock platforms from the Illawarra to the Queensland Border are likely to experience strong surf conditions for at least the next 48 hours with the deceptively powerful conditions prompting the Bureau of Meteorology and Lifesavers to issue a warning to boaties, surfers, swimmers, and rock fishers.
The warning is in place for much of coastline between Ulladulla and the Tweed with strong coastal winds also forecast.
Northern NSW in particular is likely to see these developing conditions start to intensify throughout Wednesday with a peak swell of up to 3 metres expected by midday Thursday.
Conditions are expected to ease into Friday with a consistent swell of around 1.5 metres likely throughout the weekend.
A long swell period of up to 13 seconds is also expected with rock fishers in particular urged to be aware of deceptive conditions.
“The best advice we can give people is to be aware of their environment and the changing conditions. Take the time to study a recent weather forecast before heading out and let others know what your plans are,” said NSW Lifesaving Officer Shaun Hudson.
“This is particularly important due to school holidays and people visiting beaches and coastlines that they might not be overly familiar with.
“These long period swells can be quite deceptive and we strongly encourage all rock fishers and boat users to wear a lifejacket. Common sense is the first line of defence and it’s important that people take these warnings seriously.”
