THE Big Axe at the iKew Visitor Information Centre was taken down early Tuesday morning.
Rest assured it will be back, looking resplendent.
Local Con Constantine is restoring the head of the axe. The handle is being checked and cleaned up.
When the work is done, the axe will be returned to the site on a much shorter stand as there is some corrosion in the current posts.
The big axe was the brainchild of Kew pioneer Rufus McCarthy and was erected in the late 1970s. It has been refurbished once before, in around 2001.
The refurbishment is funded through Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's Community Grant Program and led by the iKew Centre will see many community volunteers and groups working on the Axe to give it a new lease on life.
