But motorists continue to be held ransom at the bowser and we have had enough.
The reasons offered explaining why Port Macquarie has among some of the highest fuel prices in the state lack substance and don’t add up. And we’re not buying the story.
Now, the NRMA is calling on Hastings motorists to boycott the petrol stations draining our pockets, encouraging us to shop elsewhere, even out of town, for the cheapest deals.
This, they say, will boost competition and ultimately drive prices down. But will it? And should it be the motorist’s responsibility to seek out the most realistic prices to avoid being ripped off, or should there genuinely be an inquiry into the pricing disparity?
This is not an issue for the consumer to solve. And the introduction of a real time website to put the power back into the purchaser’s hands has done very little other than increase frustration.
On Thursday morning in Port Macquarie one of the big chain service stations was offering unleaded fuel at almost 10 cents a litre more than an independent service station located 300 metres up the road.
We don’t need ‘game changing’ fuel apps. We need an honest explanation from someone as to why these price discrepancies are allowed to continue unchecked.
We would like to know the real story. Someone enlighten us please. Why can the big suppliers like Coles and Woolworths continue to sell over-priced fuel when smaller competitors can sell it for less?
And how is pricing determined, particularly during peak periods and on certain days of the week when within 24 hours there can be up to a 10 cent price increase?
Why is there no across the board consistency for all fuel suppliers? Given Port Macquarie and Laurieton are just 40 kilometres apart, and even less to Wauchope, the argument that transport costs push up prices makes no sense.
So, we will take on the NRMA challenge and shop where the best local deals are even if it means driving to our neighbours in Wauchope and the Camden Haven for a better deal.
Support your independents if they are offering competitive prices. The big boys can’t hijack the market if they don’t have your dollar.
