A group organised specifically for young women of high school age is appealing for people who may be interested in running workshops and being mentors for the members.
Girl space is a program for girls aged between 12 and 18-years-old.
The program’s founder Ren Mathieson is appealing to women of the Port Macquarie- Hastings region to get involved in hosting a workshop in 2017 or volunteer for the group.
The aim of the workshops is so that the members can be motivated by strong, independent local women.
“As long as they have a passion and are willing to share their story or skills then we would love to hear from them,” Ms Mathieson said.
“We are also open to all donations of used goods that could be of use in our workshops such as fabric, paper, craft material, jars and bottles from local businesses.”
The decision behind the creation of Girl Space, Ms Mathieson said was to support the Youth Hub to help create a strong sense of community.
Photographer and founder of Wildflower Portraits Alicia Fox recently conducted a workshop for the girls.
Ms Fox said that when she was introduced to the group she felt like it was a nice, welcoming atmosphere.
“It instills a sense of unity, providing a place where girls can feel safe, included and inspired,” she said.
During the sessions the young women open up about any issues which they may encounter during school or at home.
Ms Fox’s workshop gave the girls insight into the career of photography, running a studio and daily tasks.
She said Girl Space has a positive vision to empower local girls to discover their potential and to have the confidence to express their individuality.
