This year marks the 11th year the race has been held in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area.
Port Macquarie’s Glasshouse, Westport Park and Town Green are the key locations leading up to and during the events.
The newest event in the Ironman schedule begins on Friday night, May 5; the Bright Night Run. Competitors are encouraged to wear bright clothing, glow sticks and luminous colours, the brighter, the better. The fun run will be held along the Town Green, breakwall and Town Beach area from 5.15pm. Register to be involved on the Ironman Australia website.
On Saturday May 6 the children take centre stage at Ironkids. Families can compete together or children aged 5-13 can compete as individuals. However the 2017 event involves only a run leg of various lengths for different ages. Find out more on the Ironman Australia website and register.
The full ironman race and half ironman, Port Macquarie 70.3, will be run at the same time Sunday May 7 beginning as day breaks.
Competitors will begin with the swim leg in the Hastings River (3.8km for full ironman), jump aboard their bike and cycle through to Dunbogan. The bike leg is around 90kms long. Half ironman competitors will complete one lap and full ironman athletes will complete two circuits.
The run section (42.2kms for full ironman competitors) will take place around Port Macquarie and finish on the Town Green.
Ironman Sunday on May 7 will mean Camden Haven locals need to change the way they get around.
Taking advantage of the free water taxi service running between the Dunbogan Boatshed, Laurieton United Services Club wharf and North Haven pontoon is an enjoyable way to watch different locations of the cycle leg of the race through Laurieton, Dunbogan and North Haven.
Ocean Drive from Port Macquarie to Laurieton, Bold Street from Laurie Street to Reid Street and the Dunbogan Bridge, The Boulevarde, Diamond Head Road and Camden Head Roads will be closed to motorists most of the day. Rolling road closures take affect from 6.30am to 6.30pm.
