MIDCOAST GARDEN FRIENDS
Mal McKinlay from Bonny Hills Garden Centre shared knowledge gained through over 30 years of industry experience with Midcoast Garden Friends members at their May meeting.
Mal presented a selection of beautiful new release plants, including the stunning “Diamonds in the Dark” Crepe Myrtle with its very dark, near-black foliage and delicate soft pink flowers. This plant is a spectacular version of the hardy Crepe Myrtles which grow well in this area.
In stark contrast, Mal presented Salvia “Velour White” which produces masses of pure white velvety flower heads. A member of the mint family, Salvias grow well in most positions, requiring only the occasional heavy prune to keep them looking their best.
Garden club members were keen to hear Mal talk about the ornamental ginger “Red Rubin” (Alpinia luteocarpa). Its strappy leaves are a beautiful glossy green on top, with a deep ruby red underside. Suitable for growing in pots or the garden, this plant adds foliage colour all year round.
The next meeting for Midcoast Garden Friends will be on Tuesday June 6 at 10am at Bonny Hills Community Hall. The guest speaker will be renowned landscape and garden designer Eva Cassegrain. Eva will be speaking about pruning roses and grape vines.
At the meeting there will be the opportunity to discuss garden successes, problems and their solutions. Tea and coffee will be provided. Members are asked to bring a mug and a small plate of food to share, along with plants or produce for the trading table. New members and visitors are always welcome to attend and share their interest and experience in gardening. For more information ring Jan 6559 6257 or John 6559 5165.
