Camden Haven Historical Society members are concerned about the proposed development’s impact on the historic nature and character of the site.

“The Camden Haven Historical Society only became aware of the DA when neighbouring residents, in possession of direct advice from the council that they were potentially affected by the DA proposal, came to see us. The society could not appreciate why it had not been advertised to invite public submissions,” society president Phillip Bowman said.

“The buildings on the site are heritage listed. The Post Master's House and the original Post Office are among the few of Laurieton’s oldest public buildings still surviving since the 1890's.

“The society has been working with the council on establishing a historic precinct taking in Bold, Laurie and Lake Streets.”

Mr Bowman said the development would not be in keeping with the historic nature of the site and has requested the council extend and advertise the exhibition period to allow for the community’s input.

The private owner of the site is proposing to extend the post masters residence and build two commercial premises on the Lake street side of the property.

A heritage report has supported the development, stating that it would not impact the landmark presence of the post office and extensions to the residence would not require the destruction of important original elements.

A council spokesperson said, due to the modest nature of the development, it was not required to be advertised and put on public exhibition.
