In reply to Ms Hummel’s letter ‘Off Leash Parks’ published in the Camden Haven Courier on August 9, I am a dog owner myself but I totally agree with you regarding many dog owners’ ignorance of local dog laws.

I walk my two large dogs every day and it repulses me to see so much dog droppings on paths and grass areas meant for recreation. In my area there is (one?) dog owner who picks up after their dog in clear plastic bags and throws them into the bush where they hang in the shrubs and trees like obscene Christmas decorations.
The amount of dog owners who exercise their animals in prohibited areas despite signs and those who have dogs off leash are numerous.
I also agree with you that if you don’t want a dog’s attention then it is your right as a citizen and a rate payer. I have many friends who don’t like dogs.
I really think the answer is more policing by council rangers. I rarely see rangers patrolling our beaches and parks. If this is a matter of funding I am sure this could be covered by the fines collected.
