NSW Ambulance Service Laurieton station manager Pete Versluis’ son Dan and his wife Kirran recently gained positions as paramedics in Laurieton.
Kirran and Dan started their career in Sydney before moving to Warren and then successfully transferring to Laurieton.
Kirran started working in the profession in 2011 while Dan began in 2010.
The couple are enjoying living and working in the Camden Haven. They said the lifestyle is perfect for bringing up their son Lachlan.
Kirran said it’s beautiful scenery in the Camden Haven and it doesn’t feel like work when it’s a bit holiday like. Dan said the people are really nice in the Camden Haven and it’s different to working in the city.
Pete said it’s unusual working with family but it’s certainly nice to work with Dan and Kirran.
“It’s great to have the rapport that we have as a family,” he said.
Pete’s wife Elizabeth is also involved in the medical field as she is one of the nurses at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
Sometimes the paramedic members of the Versluis family will hand over patients to Elizabeth at the emergency department.
“So it’s a very cohesive sort of role and I think being family it just makes that cohesiveness a little bit easier,” Pete said.
Pete said he doesn’t think he looks like Dan in appearance and not many people can tell they are actually father and son.
However he said soon after Dan started work in Laurieton an elderly person said to Dan 'you’ve been here before’.
Dan said ‘no I’ve only just transferred here’ and the woman said ‘but you’re Pete aren’t you?’.
When Dan came home that evening he told his father the story who replied with ‘you’re either looking really bad mate or I’m looking really good’.
Pete and Dan featured in the television series ‘Recruits Paramedics’ in 2011
