Troy Boese wins North Haven Bowling Club Amateur Fishing Club’s 10 medallion trophy

Bonny Hills resident Troy Boese says there is a lot more to fishing than just throwing in a line with a bit of bait and hoping for a snag.

The 23-year-old has been fishing since he was about three-years-old with his dad.

He recently was the first person to be awarded the North Haven Bowling Club Amateur Fishing Club’s trophy for catching all 10 species of local fish.

The competition was put in place 19 years ago when the club was originally formed.

The angler who caught the largest species in the year was awarded the medallion for that year.

Troy said the highlight of his fishing career was winning the 10 species medallion trophy.

Since 2005 Troy has been a club champion every year in sub juniors, juniors or opens.

Some of his noteworthy catch include a 106kg blue marlin, a 9kg dolphin fish and 8.6kg snapper.

Troy said he enjoys fishing because it’s a good excuse to get away and relax with mates. He enjoys the competition side of fishing too.

It took Troy four years to catch the last species for the tenth medallion.

He said depending on the species of fish there are many factors which have to be taken into consideration to secure a catch.

Troy said the tide plays a big role as well as the time of day, the bait used and type of rod.

He said he has learnt a lot through other club members about different fishing techniques.

Troy is now encouraging others not to give up on winning the 10 species medallion trophy despite it taking 19 years for someone to win it.

It took Troy a few years to catch a 22.2kg jew fish. He said once he knew it was in a particular spot he fished for nine weeks to snag it as the tide and timing had to be just right.

The local species of fish were found in the ocean, river, rock fishing and beach.

Troy sometimes gets up at 2am in the morning or at midnight to go fishing.
