While the Mid North Coast Surf Classic’s emphasis is on participation, the teenage sisters will hit the surf for bragging rights.
They will even directly oppose each other at Rainbow Beach this weekend in the open shortboard division.
13-year-old Lucy has current bragging rights after her 17-year-old sister had to withdraw from last year’s final due to other commitments.
As a result, the younger of the two had the bonus of not having to compete against her sister.
But it means Chelsea hasn’t forgotten about it leading in to this year’s event.
“Last year we both made the final, but then I had to go to a rugby tournament so I didn’t get to surf in the final,” she said.
They both admitted there was a competitive edge and Lucy was the worst at it.
“She likes getting everything her way, so it makes her a lot more competitive,” Chelsea said.
The family regularly visits the Hastings, spending the weekend at North Haven Beach while training in Port Macquarie.
Both sisters attend St Clare’s High School in Taree.
