The $1230 donation has delivered two two-seater lounges and a chair to be used by visitors who have a loved one undergoing cardiology procedures.
The donation is the latest in a long list of items donated by the volunteer group – equipment that assists Cardiology staff to better support patients who need their care or items that improve patient amenity.
In addition to medical equipment and patient comfort items, the Port Macquarie-Hastings branch has provided an extraordinary 7000 volunteer hours over the past seven years to heart patients in the Cardiac Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Rehabilitation, and other wards at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
Acting Nurse Unit Manager for Cardiology Services at the base hospital, Ms Donna Hughes, said the Port Macquarie-Hastings Heart Support Australia volunteers were a remarkable group of people who, through peer support, information and reassurance encourage patients affected by heart conditions to achieve better health outcomes.
“Our Cardiac Unit and Cardiology Services are so very fortunate to have these wonderful volunteers dedicating so much of their time and energy in support of heart patients,” Ms Hughes said.
“Our family room suddenly feels very comfortable and inviting; a place where our patients’ loved ones and friends can have a bit of privacy in relaxed surroundings.”
Branch Vice-president Mike Storrier said the volunteers’ top priority was to assist with the rehabilitation of heart patients through heart health support; and sometimes that included donations of medical equipment and improving patient amenity.
