PORT Macquarie’s mixed opens team will shoot for a State Cup title after progressing to the final day on Saturday.

The Makos cruised through the first day and did it a little tougher, but still managed to claim three wins from four starts on day two.

They proved too good for Melbourne City Lions (7-4) first up and then followed with a win over Mudgee Mudcrabs (8-6).

Easts Roosters then inflicted their first loss of the campaign in a 5-2 defeat.

Aaron Ison’s team then bounced back at the end of the day to register an 8-3 victory over Melbourne University.

The competition now enters its knockout phase.

“We are happy with how we played today and getting through to the top six tomorrow,” Ison said.

They will take on Port Hunter Marauders on field one on Sunday morning from 9.45am with a loss to end their State Cup hopes.

“They are a very good team and it's always a good game and battle,” the captain said.

“We’re pretty excited to be playing on the Sunday that's for sure, but it gets tight now with no second chances.”

Elsewhere, Doyalson Dragons’ quest at creating touch football history remains on track after they finished undefeated and on top of Pool A in the men’s open division.

They could become the first Premier League team to win a State Cup, regional championship and Vawdon Cup if they navigate their way through finals day.

They will take on the Murwillumbah Mavericks at the stadium from 10.55am on Sunday.

Port Macquarie’s Paddy Coelho and Western Suburbs finished second and will take on Hornsby Lions on field one at 10.55am on Sunday.
