While swimming is a difficult sport for a lot of us, two men are preparing to do 800 laps or 20 kilometres for charity.

Kendall Community Pool is hosting a Swim 4 Charity event on December 17 to help raise funds for Riding for the Disabled Association Kendall.

Kendall Community Pool manager Matt Stewart and Ken Dollery have been training hard to swim 20 kilometres at the event which they expect to take between six to seven hours.

Cramping is a concern for the men who say it’s also very important to ensure they stay hydrated and take in enough nutrients for energy.

In the lead up to the event Ken and Matt have been swimming between 10 and 12 kilometres each training session.

They have been eating a high carbohydrate diet to boost them for the high distance swims.

Ken has also given up alcohol which he said is tough especially in the lead up to Christmas.

Matt said he encourages the community to come along and enjoy the day no matter how far they plan to swim, as it’s all for a good cause.

“Everything we raise we thought we’d give back to a local charity,” he said.

Ken said he would like people to have a jump in the pool and swim with them for support.

“There is nothing more boring than swimming in the pool by yourself,” he said.

“When there is someone else in the pool it really helps you and keeps you kicking.”

People are invited to have a go at the five, ten, 20 kilometre swims or whatever distance they can manage at the event which will run from 7am until 2pm.

There will be a raffle, sausage sizzle and activities for kids on the day.

Holy Goat and Swimwell are sponsoring the event.
