Police media confirmed the search and retrieval operation for young Bronson Rhodes will include surf life saving volunteers, jet skis and regular patrols at the popular beach.
“The search was suspended at 5.30pm on Monday,” the police media spokesperson said.
“Patrols will continue over the next few days.”
The youngster was in a group of three who were swept out to sea on Saturday December 16. Two of the group were rescued – one was admitted to hospital but later released. Unfortunately the third member of the group could not be reached.
An intensive search was undertaken involving a range of emergency services personnel.
There has been an outpouring of emotion for the teenager who was a student at Wauchope High School and member of the Wauchope Junior Rugby League community.
The high school offered students and staff counselling on Monday and Tuesday.
In a statement to the Port News, the school principal Glen Sawle said the school has extended its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the student.
“Counselling was made available at the school for students and staff yesterday and today, and a number have taken advantage of that support,” Mr Sawle said.
“The school is also encouraging those affected by the tragedy to consider contacting support services whose contact details are on its (the school’s) website.”
The Flynns Beach headland was crowded for most of Sunday as family, friends and locals watched on as emergency services sought to retrieve the young boy’s body from the surf.
