That’s the prediction from Weatherzone for the start of 2018.
Weatherzone senior meteorologist Jacob Cronje said afternoon showers and thunderstorms were quite likely until about mid-week.
He said while it looked more likely for south-east Queensland and the northern rivers of NSW to experience severe thunderstorms, it was possible severe thunderstorms could occur in the Port Macquarie area.
The daytime temperature is predicted to reach 28 degrees on January 2 and 3.
“We have persistent circulation that is towards the coast and that is helping to build humidity along the coast and adjacent hinterland,” Mr Cronje said.
Thunderstorms are expected to give way to rain showers on January 4 when the temperature will drop slightly.
Mr Cronje said good conditions were on the horizon for the weekend when sunny skies were expected.
