“When I went to the hairdresser’s, maybe two years ago, she told me about the organisation Alopecia for Kids and I thought it would be such a cool idea to grow my hair long enough to donate to kids in need,” Maggie said.
At the end of the two year growing period Maggie said she had no regrets about cutting off her long locks of hair.
“When I first heard about the idea my hair was between 12-15cm and it had to be at least 30cms in a plait and when I finally got my hair cut it was just over that which was really cool.
“I am really glad I got to do this so another kid can have hair like me,” she said.
Maggie said when she told all her friends about her plan a lot of them didn’t know what alopecia was but thought what she was doing was great.
“A lot of my friends have been asking me about cutting my hair and they all thought it was really cool when I said what I was going to do.
“I really like my hair short, I feel like a new person and have been experimenting with lots of new and different hairstyles which is a lot of fun.
“My favourite thing to wear now that my hair is short is a headband and I have lots of different ones to try, today I am wearing a unicorn headband,” Maggie said.
Maggie also said that when her sisters found out about what she had done, they all copied her and wanted her short hair.
“Since I cut my hair my sisters have done the same, but their hair wasn’t long enough to donate.”
Maggie’s mum Carmen McKenzie said she is incredibly proud of her daughter.
“Maggie came up with this all on her own, and she insisted that it was her thing but I think we will all remember this for a long time,” Mrs McKenzie said.
