Port Macquarie-Hastings Council dog ranger Emily Andrews says that owners should follow the rule of thumb that says a dog should be on a leash at all times.

“As a rule of thumb, dogs should be on a leash at all times unless there is a sign – so when they are being walked, on the foot path and anywhere that is not private property.

“In regards to beaches we classify them for dogs by leashed, unleashed and prohibited beaches.

“Dogs are allowed off leashes at Nobbys Beach and the south end of Lighthouse Beach but even then, they must be under the control of their owners.

“Dogs are also allowed at Oxley Beach but they must be on a leash,” Ms Andrews said.

Ms Andrews said that while dog attacks are not increasing, the local council rangers are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and if incidents occur get as much information about the issue and then ring the rangers who can either come or follow up.

“When dog attacks or incidents occur the rangers certainly do their best to follow up on the reports made so it is important if people see or are involved in something they report it to us.

“The important thing to remember is if you or your dog are involved in an attack remain calm.

“Often if someone is involved in an attack they scream which can escalate the situation further, remaining calm is a good start, and if possible collect as many details from the owner or people who witnessed the attack so that rangers can follow it up,” she said.

Ms Andrews also said that the fine for owners not adhering to the rules can be substantive.

“If a dangerous or aggressive dog is found to attack someone the rangers can issue a fine up to $550 among other fines which can be issued for offences including unregistered dogs or dogs being where they aren’t allowed.”

And while the majority of pet owners do the right thing, Ms Andrews said that the holidays are a timely reminder about keeping dogs and humans safe.

“Over the Christmas New Year period people and dogs were generally well behaved but owners should remember to follow the rules and to pick up after their dogs as no one wants to walk on dog poo.”
