Kendall resident Tin Hta Nu said in 2007 there was a cyclone in Burma and many children were left orphaned.
“Some orphaned boys were saved by the monasteries and girls by the nunneries,” she said.
“There are 80 girl orphans aged 3 to 17 years in Thukhitayama nunnery in Rangoon.”
In 2017 the Camden Haven community donated $3000 to the cause. The major donor was Kendall Community Op Shop which contributed $1500.
Tin said the chief nun expressed they had never receive this amount before.
It was presented to them by the Kendall Community Op Shop treasurer Phil Higgins while on his visit to Burma.
The other $1500 donation was from residents of Camden Haven, as well as sales from Kendall resident Ian Oxenford and Tin Hta Nu’s Aung Mingala Farm produce.
The donation covered four months of food supply for 80 girl orphans and 30 nuns, school books, stationary, robes, umbrellas and footwear. Kendall residents also sent stationary and Kendall Tennis Club sent balls for the children to play.
Tin said daily food is the immediate need for the orphans so food expenses were a great priority among other needs.
She said due to the donation from the Kendall Community Op Shop and residents of the Camden Haven, orphans can have their educational and clothing needs for the whole year and food for four months.
Tin said every morning at breakfast before going to school the orphaned girls will be sending their loving kindness to their op shop volunteers and Camden Haven residents for their generosity.
