While damage has been minimal during the recent quakes, a Geoscience Australia expert has not discounted the possibility that the series of tremors felt on the coast in recent days could be a lead-up to a larger earthquake.

“Given the current activity residents are likely to feel more earthquakes occurring as there’s no reason for us to suspect that activity will stop.

“While it’s rare and none of these earthquakes have been big, there is always a chance that a bigger earthquake can occur,” senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia Hugh Glanville said.

The most recent earthquake on Wednesday (January 24) was one of the largest in the recent series at magnitude 4.2.

Wednesday’s quake was felt across the region from Bellingen and Nambucca Heads through to Kempsey and South West Rocks and throughout the Hastings.

Sharon Wurm was at bingo in the Wauchope RSL Club on Wednesday afternoon.

“The whole room felt it at the RSL club, and my son said the doors were rattling at Rosewood,” she said.
