In the January 30, 2008 edition of the Camden Haven Courier it was reported there was a soggy beginning and then a scorcher to finish Australia Day – which proved to be a day of all seasons.
The page one headline was ‘Australia Day in the Haven’ where almost 100 braved the rainy weather to wave the national flag and see nine locals become citizens.
Australia Day fun continued in the afternoon with the family fun day at Laurieton United Servicemen’s Club. The event was organised by the Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club and the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce.
“A showdown on the river between the Camden Haven Surf Boat women’s team and the newly formed Dragon Boat Club saw the newcomers triumph by half a boat length in their race from the Sea rescue shed to the club jetty,” it was reported.
“In the highlight event the whacky raft race saw a new champion team take first prize in their well-prepared vessel. The raft built and powered by the chefs of the Laurieton United Servicemen’s Club was past the post well ahead of their competitors.”
