On the eve of Australia Day, I attended the Port Macquarie-Hastings Australia Day awards presentation at the Glasshouse and had the opportunity of presenting some of the certificates to the nominees and announcing the winners.

It should come as no surprise that the Kendall Men’s shed was among a number of groups nominated for the Community Group of the Year. The big axe on the iKew Visitors Centre, acts as a symbol of some of the projects undertaken by the Kendall Men’s shed. The category for Community Group of the Year was won by the friends of Mrs York’s Garden, who have done an amazing job over three years to re-establish the garden of Mrs Bertha York, who was born on January 26, in 1903.
Congratulations to both Mary Nelson, a stalwart from the Comboyne community, and Barry Barr, the ‘go to man’ in Kendall for their nominations for Senior Citizen of the Year. The winner of the Senior Citizen of the Year went to George Campbell from Wauchope for his tireless volunteer activities with the Uniting Church, Rotary, the Farmer’s markets and the Wauchope Sing Australia Group.
All the nominees for Young Citizen of the Year have already over achieved within their community and we would do well to keep an eye on what they will achieve in the future. Our very own Lindsay Kaul was nominated for his musical talent and organisational ability demonstrated with his involvement with the Players Theatre in Port Macquarie. The winner of the Young Australian of the Year was Rhiannon Simmonds, an unwavering advocate for eco-friendly and sustainable living.
So many of the major celebrations in the Camden Haven involve North Brother and Australia Day was no different, with a 7.30am breakfast and presentation ceremony on the mountain. It was exciting to welcome two new Australians at the Citizenship Ceremony.
