“Considering the work has only been underway since November, it’s amazing how quickly it’s been done,” secretary Phil Higgins said.
Mr Higgins said the extension was done for occupational health and safety reasons, to provide more space for volunteers to sort through donations to the shop.
He said recently the shop has been inundated with generous donations from the community.
The Kendall Community Op Shop is funding the extension and as a result Mr Higgins said community grants for 2018 would be postponed until 2019. However he said sponsorship for 2018 would go ahead.
The official opening of the building is expected to be in May.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the generous support of building supervisor Robert Rule who gave his services free of charge,” Mr Higgins said.
He thanked volunteers who helped with the garden landscaping and painting.
The Kendall Community Op Shop has become an integral part of Kendall and the wider Port Macquarie-Hastings community.
Since 2009 $858,500 of funding made through the shop has been distributed back to the community. This does not include the $185,000 worth of improvements made to the Kendall Pool.
All the funds from the Kendall Community Op Shop go back into the community through a generous grants and sponsor scheme which funds non-profit groups and organisations.
In 2017 Phil Higgins visited Burma to deliver valuable resources for orphans including four months of food supply for 80 girl orphans and 30 nuns, school books, stationary, robes, umbrellas and footwear. Kendall residents also sent stationary and Kendall Tennis Club sent balls for the children to play.
The shop strives to be a place where the community is served well, the 80 volunteers are valued and the providers of goods are acknowledged and thanked.
