Books for sale, raffle tickets and cupcakes greeted customers as they came into the chemist as a reminder that ovarian cancer is a silent killer among women.
Pharmacy assistant Pat Roser, said that it was important women remembered to go to their doctor and get regular checks for ovarian cancer as early detection is vital.
“Ovarian cancer does not discriminate with age so it’s vital women of all ages get checked,” she said.
“We have been doing the ovarian cancer awareness day for more than eight years, and we always get fantastic feedback from our customers.
“Women say it is a great reminder to book in an appointment at the doctor to get checked, but also men who have family members or friends who have had ovarian cancer come and thank us for raising the awareness.”
Ms Roser said that many women who get diagnosed with ovarian cancer may not realise in the early stages because the symptoms aren’t always obvious.
“The symptoms associated with ovarian cancer are feeling bloated or full when you have just started eating which some women may not attribute to cancer, so it is important that anything out of the ordinary is checked out,” she said.
“And as well as bloating, any women who experiences any abnormal discharge for them should absolutely go and get checked.
“Ladies say that nothing bad will ever happen to them, but making sure you have regular checks is a way to ensure that if you do develop ovarian cancer it is diagnosed early and treated.”
