The municipal council will expedite the installation of concrete steps on Pacific Drive, at the intersection of Everard Street. The Road Safety Council advised council it deplored the long delay in providing adequate pedestrian facilities, particularly on Pacific Drive. The municipal engineer, Mr E.F. Grogan said a previous inspection showed only the steps were required.
Council decided not to abolish parking on the western side of Tuppenny Road. The Road Safety Council asked for the parking to be abolished, due to the narrow width of the road. The municipal engineer, Mr E.F. Grogan, said parking at Flynns Beach was at a premium, and all facilities should be retained.
The Department of Education advised seven acres of land off Widderson Street and Oxley Highway have been resumed for public school purposes.
Council Questions
Ald C. Thurling mentioned depot drums obstructing Mr Jack Hicks’ driveway in Bridge Street.
Ald G.M. Warlters asked if council and the Surf Club could open Lighthouse Beach in holiday times. He also asked for a report on how beautification of frontages could be enforced in industrial areas, and for the OCC to be asked to put up a proposition for underground lighting in the main street.
Club’s $58,000 six month take
West Port Macquarie Bowling Club took $58,065 from July I to December 31 last year. This is $22,629 more than for the same period in 1966.
The treasurer, Gordon Wilson, told Thursday night’s meeting, beer sales were $16,110 ($10,288 in 1966). Club president Basil Borger congratulated the treasurer on his efforts and also of the untiring work of the secretary-manager, Mr Cy Dickens, who he said was largely responsible for the club’s excellent growth.
A tender has been let for the third green, to extend from the back of the clubhouse out into the Hastings River making it one of the first bowling greens in Australia to be built out into a river.
