Emily Harris from Kendall will walk 30 kilometres with three of her friends for the annual Wild Women On Top Sydney Coastrek. The women will join nearly 3000 other trekkers.
“I’m turning 30-years-old in April and wanted to do something big as a personal achievement and to raise funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation,” Emily said.
Emily will trek with friends Cassie Oxenbridge, Jules Binskin and Sam Elliott.
The ladies have been raising funds together by selling boxed occasion cards and hosting fundraising events.
The group has joined its fundraising efforts with another Camden Haven team named Beauties and the Beast. Participants include Kim Barry, Sharon Wilkinson, Craig Barry and Paiton Wilkinson.
The Fred Hollows Foundation’s founding director Gabi Hollows said it was inspiring to see so many people join the fight to end avoidable blindness.
“There are more than 36 million people in the world who are blind, and four out of five of them don’t need to be,” she said.
“I am always moved and inspired to see people still going to such great lengths to help realise Fred’s vision of a world where no person is needlessly blind.”
Wild Women on Top Coastrek founder Di Westaway said the event was a way for women to come together for their own health and wellbeing, while also changing the lives of others.
“By taking part in Coastrek, women are restoring sight to other women, which helps them to return to work so they can provide for themselves and their families, and also helps girls to return to school and continue their education,” she said.
Since 2009 trekkers have raised more than $20 million for The Fred Hollows Foundation, helping people living in the world’s poorest communities.
