Laurieton Police were alerted to the incident at about 6.45am and were told by witnesses they had seen a five metre aluminium boat almost go vertical over waves.
Sergeant Walker said police were told the boat’s motor had allegedly stalled.
One witness on a jet ski went to assist the man and towed the vessel further out to sea, away from rocks.
Camden Haven Marine Rescue was contacted and three crew members retrieved the boat.
The male occupant of the vessel was treated by paramedics for a back injury and transported to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for treatment.
Sergeant Walker said the man was later transferred to John Hunter Hospital.
