Business owners met with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to discuss the findings with Mayor Peta Pinson on Thursday, March 15.
Council’s plan is set to guide how the Kew main street will look in the future, and will likely include improvements to road safety and parking, streetscape beautification, the installation of new seating and better pedestrian connectivity.
Between mid-December 2017 and mid-March 2018, members of the Kew Business Community conducted a traffic data collection process.
Peter Newman from Kew Industrial put together the traffic report and said the aim of the data collected was to determine how many vehicles were passing through the Kew Main Street intersection during the hours of 5am and 6pm between Monday and Friday.
“The Kew business community sought to determine an accurate count of vehicle movements passing through the intersection with a view to providing factual information to the councillors, the general manager and staff members of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council,” he said.
The report found an average of 641 vehicles pass through the intersection each hour and over two million each year.
Kew business owners are pushing for the Kew Main Street Master Plan project to get underway as soon as possible to continue the viability, growth and safety of the community and businesses.
In their submission Kew business owners outlined they would like traffic slowing infrastructure to be put in place, the implementation of safe pedestrian crossings and parking to be identified and sign posted.
The traffic data in the report supported the submission that business community members presented to council.
The report outlined traffic volume passing through the Kew Main Street intersection will increase significantly in coming years.
Council’s population forecasts predict 38 per cent growth in the Camden Haven West area by 2036.
Council’s Urban Growth Management Strategy 2018-2036 targets the Kew area with very strong growth in residential development moving towards the Kew intersection.
