Pat has been reading poetry to residents for eight years and said she has made some beautiful friends through her volunteer role.
“I get a lot of pleasure from being a volunteer at Whiddon Laurieton,” she said.
“I visit once a week to read a variety of Australian poetry and the group I read to have become like family.
Pat said she enjoys bringing back memories for residents and look forward to attending my weekly session.
“I love to see their smiles and enjoy the hugs I get too,” she said.
As a former school librarian Pat said she is passionate about poetry and particularly enjoys Banjo Paterson and CJ Dennis (The Sentimental Bloke).
Whiddon Laurieton has a number of exciting opportunities for members of the local community as a volunteer.
There are a range of opportunities on offer from gardening with residents, to leading arts and crafts sessions, helping residents with knitting, or joining residents for a board game and a cuppa and a chat.
Whiddon Laurieton’s director of care services George Fotoulis said volunteers at the aged care home play an important role and truly help to enrich the lives of residents.
“Our volunteers are extremely valued and provide important social support to our residents,” he said.
“They bring smiles, laughter and opportunities for residents to share and learn new skills.
“It can also be a wonderful journey for volunteers as it provides an opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills and share experiences.
“For many volunteers, knowing how much they make a difference in someone’s life can be incredibly rewarding.”
