Anna Osborne’s black and white design of Tacking Point Lighthouse and a whale will feature on about 4000 reusable bags.

The jute bags will be used across the Hastings as part of the Plastic Free July Program.

Miss Osborne won Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Design a Bag Arwork competition.

She said it would be exciting to see her design on the bags.

The bags will be launched at the Port Macquarie Foreshore markets in July, recognising the Plastic Free July movement, which has gained popularity over the past few years.

The program encourages people to search for alternatives to plastic, particularly single-use items, in their daily lives.

Anna Osborne's winning design will be printed on about 4000 jute bags to be distributed across the area.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council group manager Maria Doherty said this initiative was to encourage people to be thoughtful about reusing and avoiding waste.

“We particularly want to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, which have such a detrimental impact on the environment, particularly the ocean and marine life,” Ms Doherty said.

Miss Osborne is environmentally aware.

She recycles soft plastics at Coles, and has a compost bin and a worm farm.

Miss Osborne said the Plastic Free July movement had a really important message.

She received $1000 for the win.

Competition runners-up Chaney Boyle from Laurieton and Sarita Singh from Port Macquarie received a $100 gift card.

The competition was open to residents of the local government area.

More than 60 entries were received.
