All we need now is for the first really cool change of Autumn to happen and some great angling should be on offer.
In the estuary, bream remain consistent with the recent fresh paying dividends. Best results have been achieved around the coal wall and up Limeburners, although we are again hearing of fish feeding around Rawdon Island.
Those fishing up river have also been scoring a few school mulloway however we are hearing a few rumours of better fish being encountered around the breakwalls. There have also been some nice leather jackets around the break walls which is pleasing to see.
On the blackfish front, results are still inconsistent with only a few reasonable fish here and there. Flathead however remain most active, as to mud crabs particular upstream of the highway bridges.
On the beaches, tailor have been consistent particularly throughout the Camden Haven area. Small metal lures in the 20 to 40 gram range seem to be doing the trick. Locally, Lighthouse has also been producing a tailor, together with the odd bream and whiting. North beach has given up a few nice school mulloway after dark with beach worms and whole squid both proving successful.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers and quality remain terrific with the Lighthouse, Bonny Hills and ledges further south all worth investigating. Bream numbers too, are on the improve and should be well worth targeting over the coming weeks. Drummer numbers remain rather quiet however the odd fish has been taken from Diamond Head. Look for this action to step up a notch once the water begins to cool by a few degrees.
For the land based game fraternity, still a few longtail tuna about, with those putting in the time consistently snaring the odd fish. By all reports though, the better action is currently well south of Port.
Offshore fishing has been a little mixed with plenty of current but cool green water in close. As such, the mackeral have been largely absent from our local water however the odd longtail tuna and cobia have been about close in.
Snapper reports however have been encouraging, with some nice fish in excess of 8 kilos taken close in off both Lighthouse Beach and Plomer on both plastics and bait. There have also been plenty of pearl perch reasonably close off Plomer which is always welcome from a culinary perspective.
Until next time, tight lines and good fishing to all.
