The world record attempt is the most people stargazing across multiple venues in Australia and is a collaboration with the ABC and the Australian National University.

The current record is set at 7,960 people across 37 locations.

Student liaison officer at CSU Port Macquarie, Ruby Simmons, said the event will be a family friendly fun night looking at the stars.

“We are wanting as many people as possible to bring their telescopes and binoculars to our campus on May 23, to join us in trying to help break the stargazing world record,” Ms Simmons said.

“For this world record, the participants will stargaze at the moon through a telescope or binoculars for a 10 minute period, simultaneously, across multiple sites throughout Australia.

“The current world record was set in 2015 so we are hoping to break it on the night.”

She said there will be hot drinks and a barbecue on the night with festivities kicking off from 7pm.

“We want families, young people as well as parents and grandparents to come along, we will have hot drinks and food available and it should be a great night out,” she said.

“This is a free community event and will include a live screening of Stargazing Live with Brian Cox on a big screen and we will also have a special guest astronomer, with money raised from the event going to our local Observatory.”

CSU Port Macquarie students Jess Barthelson and Breanna Goodear said they are really excited about the event.

“I love looking at the stars, coming to study in Port Macquarie I used to go to the observatory all the time with my family in Canberra, so to be able to take part in something like this is going to be super cool,” Jess said.

“I think it will be a great thing to say you were a part of, especially if we break the record for the most people stargazing across multiple venues.”

“I think it is cool to know that if we do it, we will be doing the same thing as so many different people all over the country,” Breanna said.
