Eric said the loving gesture of holding hands, now has a dual purpose to support one another and to help prevent any potential falls.
The Lorne couple celebrated their 65th anniversary on May 30, after their wedding was at Taree Presbyterian Church in 1953.
Eric said it was ‘love at first sight’ when he first laid eyes on Eileen while she played tennis.
He was introduced to her by a friend.
“It was love at first sight and has been ever since then,” he said.
The couple courted for about three years before Eric proposed.
“My father moved our family from Foster to Lorne, to a property only two miles from where Eric lived,” Eileen said.
“Eric used to ride his horse to come see me.”
Eileen was 20-years-old when they married and Eric was 22-years-old.
The couple never argue and discuss everything together before making a decision.
“We’re both boss,” Eric said.
“To have a strong marriage you need love and respect for one another.
“It’s not a hard thing to do.”
The couple have four children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
“We like to teach them about love,” Eric said.
They describe their life together as a ‘terrific journey’.
Eric and Eileen have lived on the same property at Lorne since they married 65 years ago. It was where Eric grew up.
The couple celebrated their anniversary surrounded by close family members and with cake.
