The adventure sport of orienteering is coming back to Port Macquarie-Hastings in June.
The three new free taster events on the June long weekend, June 9-11, follow the initial foray in November 2017, when nearly 100 keen locals explored Town Beach and Kooloonbung Creek.
The three events will again be conducted in streets, parks and reserves. They require only basic navigation and are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. If you can walk to the corner shop you can do it.
Orienteering appeals to anyone who enjoys exercise and being outdoors, and is a great way to discover new places.
Bushwalkers, trail runners, adventure racers, athletes, families – come along and give it a go. Children will love the electronic timing and scoring. (There is a $10 fully refundable deposit for timing stick hire.)
The weekend program is:
Saturday, June 9: Tacking Point Surf Club, cnr Matthew Flinders Drive and Dent Cres. Start any time between 1-3pm.
Sunday, June 10: Netball courts, cnr Grant St and Burrawan St. Start any time between 10am-12pm.
Monday, June 11: Lake Cathie Community Centre, cnr Mulloway Rd and Cathie Circuit. Start any time between 9.30-11am.
Sunday’s event will have some checkpoints near koala sculptures in the CBD to coincide with the Koala Festival.
The local contact number over the weekend is 0416 040 135.
Using the specially prepared map, participants will have 45 minutes to visit as many checkpoints (called controls) as they can.
The free weekend is part of Orienteering NSW’s aim to expand its club network into regional NSW and has been made possible thanks to funding from the Australian Sports Commission.
