It was the first group meeting for the owners and their dachshunds, who are affectionately known as sausage dogs. 

Organiser Jean Ballands said she wanted to get a group together to raise awareness of the dachshunds who need to be rehomed or adopted. 

“We want to help the dogs who are desperate to be in the care of a loving family,” she said. 

Jean said the group is supportive of the work which Dachshund Rescue Australia does in rescuing and rehoming dogs across Australia. 

Dachshund Rescue Australia has been operating since 2009. 

Dachshund Rescue also has a list of dedicated foster carers should people need to surrender their dachshund into care. 

The foster carers look after the dachshunds in their own homes until the organisation has found the right home for their needs.

Kaye and Scott Mackenzie have a four-year-old dachshund named Archie. 

“He’s very playful, good-natured and sociable,” Scott said. 

The couple are currently looking at adopting another dachshund to keep Archie company.
