The NSW government announced a boost of $600 million additional funding for dedicated road safety improvements and enhanced police enforcement. The recent increase in the road toll called for more investment in targeted initiatives.
The total investment to reduce deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads in the next five years is $1.9 billion. We are addressing speeding, drink and drug driving, driver fatigue, pedestrian and cyclist safety - proven initiatives to lower the road toll.
Priorities include: $640 million to save lives on country roads via infrastructure safety upgrades; $250 million for enhanced enforcement, with 50 additional highway patrol officers in regional areas, roadside alcohol testing and a doubling of mobile drug testing; $180 million to increase livability and safety in urban communities through safety upgrades.
Every driver, rider and pedestrian must still do their bit by taking responsibility for their actions on the road. To view Road Safety Plan 2021: towardszero.nsw.gov.au/roadsafetyplan
Celebrate grandparents
Local residents are encouraged to celebrate grandparents and older people in their lives by nominating them for an award, or getting involved in local events in the community ahead of Grandparents Day in October. The 2018 NSW Grandparent of the Year local and state awards celebrate the valuable contributions grandparents and seniors make to their families and communities. There are some truly inspiring grandparents and older people who make our community a supportive, inclusive place to live. This is your chance to showcase the selflessness of local seniors and show our appreciation for volunteering their time, sharing their knowledge and wisdom, and supporting their families. Submit a nomination at grandparentsday.nsw.gov.au.
