Chappy visits the residents at Whiddon Group for five days each fortnight and spends his time lapping up the attention, getting pats and eating sneaky treats.
Chappy joined the Whiddon Group family through a partnership with Camvet. All his vet fees are free.
Coowner Brendon who works at Whiddon Group said there are a few residents who are avid dog lovers and Chappy has helped make their lives brighter.
“One lady used to breed dogs and she thinks he is one who she bred,” he said.
“It’s taken her down memory lane to the days when she used to breed her own dogs.”
Brendon said Chappy tends to gravitate towards the people who he knows and likes.
“In the morning after he greets everyone when he arrives at work in the morning, he will bring himself around to Barb Beck’s room.”
“They’ve got a nice bond.”
Barb had dogs her whole life.
She saves the ‘good biscuits’ for Chappy and lets him jump up on her bed for pats.
“I always make him sit down before he gets a bickie,” she said.
“He’s getting a little bit fat but it’s only because we do these things.”
Chappy also visits the dementia residents at the aged residential home.
Brendon said he wants residents to feel like Chappy is their own pet.
“A nice little dog who goes around for a pat, a lick and begs for food,” he said.
“All the things animals do when they are at home.”
Brendon said Chappy is on a diet, as he currently gets too many treats at Whiddon Group Laurieton.
As a beagle, Chappy was chosen for his size and social nature.
