The community is being warned to avoid an area at the southern side of the Lake Cathie entrance, due to the exposure of building materials which might contain asbestos.

The area near the corner of Bundella Avenue and Illaroo Road has been signposted by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
Council was notified of the materials by a member of the public in late July, and staff immediately followed public safety protocols to remove all visible building material from the site.
A spokesperson from council said it has been suggested the area had been used as a dumping ground for building material resulting from home renovations in the village around 30 years ago.
Director Melissa Watkins said council has followed regulatory procedure to ensure the safety of the local community and Council work crews.
“Lake Cathie is still safe to use and will remain open, however it is important the community stay clear of the restricted area as a precautionary measure, until all assessments and remediation actions have been completed,” she said.
“Council has informed the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Crown Lands of the material, and the remedial actions taken to date.”
Council will continue to work with the EPA, Crown Lands and designated environmental consultants to further assess the area.
Ms Watkins said a Remediation Action Plan would be developed to ensure the site is safe for public use.
